I was at home, sleeping in a bit because I'd worked late the night before. I remember exactly what my dad said when he woke me up- "There's been a major terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and 10,000 people are probably dead." I shot out of bed, turned the T.V. to CNN, and watched as the second plane hit (or the first of many replays- I don't remember the time). When the Pentagon was hit, I started freaking out, because my brother-in-law worked in D.C., and who knew what else was a target? I spent the rest of the day either at church or driving around with my sister, trying to get to my nephew, whose school had been evacuated.

Today, on the tenth annivesary, I'm spending the morning at church. The bell choir is ringing a special piece written in memory of the victims at all three services.

"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again."- Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier. My favorite novel of all time.

Speaking of books, I finished Kathy Reichs' new one, Flash and Bones, in one day. I enjoyed it, had some interesting stuff. I was wondering when one of Tempe's cases would take place at a NASCAR function, with most of the stories taking place in Charlotte, after all!

ETA- I enjoyed reading other answers to this block- I kept seeing "Скарлетт О'Хара не была красавицей..." I never knew Gone with the Wind was popular in Russia! *lol*

I had quite a few favorite dolls as a child, most were lost during my family's many moves.

I think my absolute favorite doll as a small child was Baby Beans- I took her everywhere. She just vanished- I wish I still had her. Here's a pic of me with B.B. (I was three)-

I had a Dancerella, too. She was one of the casualties of the move from New York to South Dakota. :(

I also had a bunch of Muppet dolls, and still have them. Kermit hangs on my DVD rack:

Yes, I was a child of the 70's!

The Eleventh Doctor...assuming he's learned some table manners since "The Eleventh Hour". :p It would be amusing. Plus he's cute. Amy and Rory can come, too.

Kira is for my (now deceased) cat, and Mowett was a favorite character from Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels. Loved the movie version of him, too!

No plans on ever changing it.

Sherlock. Too bad it was only three episodes, and we have to wait until next fall for more...

Only returning show I care about at all is House. Not really looking forward to the "Huddy" plot, though, because I think that "ship" sailed two seasons ago! Law and Order: Special Victims Unit will be a "eh, nothing else is on so I'll watch it" show. It is nowhere near as good as it used to be, but Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni still rock, so I'll watch for them.

New shows- Law and Order: Los Angeles. Could be fun!

Oh, this is a good question. I think the first big news story I clearly remember was the Pan-Am/KLM runway collision in Tenerife, March 1977. I was five and a half, and saw it on the news. I remember being scared half to death by the charred wreckage of the planes and the hangar totally filled with coffins. Just the thing a little girl who loved to fly needed to see, huh? Mom and Dad had to explain to me that this wasn't a normal thing in air travel. Besides, when were we ever going to Tenerife? :p

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenerife_airport_disaster

Later that year, Elvis died. The other big story of '77!

The next year, the big story was Jonestown. Now that was a news story I wish my parents had turned the T.V. off for. :( How do you explain mass suicide to a seven-year-old? But Mom and Dad were firm believers in not sheltering me or my sister from the harsh realities of life. The news was always on at dinnertime. Probably why I'm still a news junkie today, and why my guilty pleasure television shows are disaster documentaries.

Da-da. Apparently, I said it at 4 1/2 months. Most likely I was just making noises and Mom thought I was actually speaking! *lol*

One accident, and one what-if:

1. Back in '95, I fell down my aunt's basement stairs. I managed to only sprain my ankle, but if I had fallen at a different angle, I would likely have broken my neck. (The second time I sprained my ankle in '06, I just stepped in a hole I didn't see.)

2. A couple of years ago, my dad was driving my sister's Prius to get the tires fixed. I was planning to go with him, but decided not to. Lucky I didn't go. He was smashed into by an idiot woman racing out of a parking lot at warp speed. Dad had minor injuries, the Prius was totaled...and had I been in the car, I probably would have been killed. The passenger side was completely obliterated.

Not an accident, but a "Jeez, I was just there!" moment: In 2002, during the sniper attacks in the D.C. metro area, one of the (non fatal) shootings happened in a Michaels parking lot in Spotsylvania- where I had been just a half an hour earlier. Yikes. Too close to home...

And in 1988, I got home from Europe just a couple of weeks before the bombing of Pan Am 103. Mom really didn't want to let me fly ever again...

[Error: unknown template qotd]Probably [livejournal.com profile] wrongwayjaneway   and [livejournal.com profile] crusherdisciple , because they were among my first friends at Trek BBS, where I met much of my f-list in the first place!

Speaking of lj, today is my fifth anniversary here! Wow. All I can say is thank God for this journal and my f-list. They've helped me through some tough times, especially in the past month or so! And where else on the internet can I squee about obscure cute British actors?

[Error: unknown template qotd]The most beautiful view I've ever seen was in Rocky Mountain National Park, on a drive on Trail Ridge Road. It was early June, and there was still snow on the mountains, and wildflowers of every type and color covering everything. It was truly heaven on Earth. I didn't have a camera with me that day...but a photo would not have been able to do it justice. The park is huge and wonderful, but it was just this one spot that took my breath away that day. I really miss Colorado sometimes.

I do have pictures of other Rocky trips (and Mesa Verde, the Sand Dunes, Garden of the Gods, Four Corners- God, I loved Colorado!), but they're not on the computer. I'll have to upload them someday.

[Error: unknown template qotd]Cell phones going off. In church. In the middle of the sermon, communion, or the choir's anthem. Grrrrr. HATE. Even worse- the people who ACTUALLY ANSWER THEIR PHONES and start a conversation. Yeah, in church. I've heard it happen before. Oh, it even happened once in the choir loft! The phone's owner had the decency to be embarrassed and turned the phone off immediately.

24 last night- TONY IS DEAD (again) TO ME! Arrrrrgh! Poor Jack. I can't wait to see their final confrontation!

Have many new beads to play with, will create something tonight! Also, I started a new cross stitch.

Can't wait to see episode 4 of All the Small Things! *prepares to drool*

My first post was on April 24, 2004, and it was simply an introductory post. I started a journal mainly to join some communities that live journal had to offer. My fifth anniversary is coming up, and I'm still here, still posting! I never imagined I'd keep this journal for so long.

[Error: unknown template qotd] Off the top of my head:

Rebecca
by Daphne Du Maurier
Bleak House
by Charles Dickens
Pride and Prejudice (actually, a complete works volume would be better!)
by Jane Austen
The Lord of the Rings
by J.R.R. Tolkien
Complete Works of William Shakespeare (hopefully an edition with study guides/glossaries!)

Four favorites, plus one that would take a long time to get through. Five books is not enough. 100 books isn't enough!

kiramowett: Kira is my cat. Mr. Mowett is a favorite character from Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels. No story, really. I just use Kira as part of my username just about everywhere.

[Error: unknown template qotd]

I would ask Kira why she stares into space all the time, and what she's seeing. It's odd behavior, even for a cat. And I'd ask Eddie why he "chose" me- like he somehow knew I would take care of him when he showed up as a lost and hungry kitten. Cats seem to know when someone has a good heart, I guess. Eddie showed up, and I just melted. I just had to take him to the vet and then adopt him!

I am a Pig. Oink, oink!

"Occupying the last position in the Chinese Zodiac, the 12th, the Pig symbolizes such character traits as diligence, compassion, and generosity. Pigs enjoy life and because they are entertaining, others enjoy their company. Pigs are giving souls and reap much enjoyment when they’re helping others, but sometimes they give too much. Honesty is what Pigs give and it’s what they expect to receive in return."

Yeah, I think I do fit much of the description. I like to entertain.
