Godspeed, John Glenn. The first American to orbit the Earth and former Senator was 95.

Finally got to see Doctor Strange. It was excellent. Also went to see A Christmas Story: The Musical last week. Absolutely wonderful.

I helped my dad host his pre-Rotary party last week. I forgot that he had a sort-of celebrity in his club- Clint Van Zant, that guy you see on MSNBC whenever there's a mass shooting or other big crime. He was at the party. So that was interesting!

Cookies are almost all baked. The choir carol service is on Sunday. Christmas is almost here. The season is just moving fast!

I went to see Oklahoma! at the Riverside with Mom and Dad on Sunday. It was a wonderful production. I'd forgotten how much I loved this show!

The Christmas Show is a musical version of A Christmas Story. I can't wait!

Rory has finally warmed up to Katie. Usually he hides if he even knows she's coming over. Tonight she came over to watch a Broadway live stream of She Loves Me. She was here for almost three hours, and Rory slowly came out. First he stared at her, then crept closer and closer, and finally let her scratch his head! He hasn't let her go near him since he was a kitten. Progress!

She Loves Me was awesome. I wish we could have gone to New York to see it in person, but it closes next week.

This was my weekend. I went to see Spamalot at the Riverside Theater. It was hilarious, and just as good as it was when I saw it in D.C.! My Black Knight pull-apart doll was pissed that I didn't take him, but I brought him a souvenir!

 photo spamknight_zps6310326d.jpg

It took me all weekend, but I put together a Hawkeye-themed notebook with Mod Podge.

 photo hawkbook_zps6078becc.jpg

Finally, there are still toads around. One didn't seem to like the other Black Knight. The feeling was mutual. Dane, he won't bite you!

I spent a good part of the day shoveling snow. I managed to sprain my bad ankle, so now I'm in pain and can't walk much. Oh, joy. And it snowed again today! Ugh.

Went to see Gypsy at the Riverside Theater. It was awesome. I've never even seen the movie, though I knew some of the music.

I made a card from a template found on Tumblr:

And Clint and Tasha had a little fun, too:

May 2014 suck less than 2013 for all of us. If 2013 did not suck for you, I hope 2014 is even better for you.

My feelings about 2013:

Thank you Malcolm Tucker/Twelfth Doctor. (They really need to let Peter Capaldi swear at least once on Doctor Who...)

Went to the Riverside Center with Mom and Dad to see White Christmas. Had a really nice time, got to get all dressed up in my formal dress. The whole theater was decorated for the event! The show was great, but the DJ for the party after was too damn loud!

Oh, I also had some stowaways...Clint, Tasha, Thor, and Sif wanted to tag along. (yes, the pictures suck. I was using my cell phone!)

Saw American Hustle. It was awesome. Also saw Philomena, which was heartbreaking. Will elaborate on both later. Going to see Wolf of Wall Street and Saving Mr. Banks later this week...and I'm going to the Newseum on Friday to see the JFK Assassination exhibit (it closes next week), and the special Anchorman movie exhibit!

Oh, wow...

John Barrowman singing Being Alive from Company (Kennedy Center 2002). HOW DID I MISS THIS I COULD HAVE SEEN HIM I COULD HAVE GOTTEN TICKETS!

Quite possibly one of my favorite Broadway songs- definitely my favorite written by Stephen Sondheim. (Number 2 is Not While I'm Around from Sweeney Todd, number 3 is Send in the Clowns from A Little Night Music, number 4 is On the Steps of the Palace from Into the Woods)

Somebody, need me too much,
Somebody, know me too well,
Somebody, pull me up short
And put me through hell
And give me support
For being alive,
Make me alive.

Make me confused,
Mock me with praise,
Let me be used,
Vary my days.
But alone is alone, not alive.

Somebody, crowd me with love,
Somebody, force me to care,
Somebody, make me come through,
I'll always be there,
As frightened as you,
To help us survive
Being alive,
Being alive,
Being alive!

I tried to watch NBC's live Sound of Music. I couldn't get through it. Carrie Underwood just can't act, and the show is more than just singing Do-Re-Mi. The kids were pretty blah. Audra MacDonald as Mother Superior was the only thing I liked. I turned it off and started listening to Broadway show albums, particularly Company. For a minute, I imagined Jeremy Renner singing Being Alive. He's got the range, and he's said he wants to do a musical someday. I bet he'd be great as Bobby!

Edited because I got my American Idol chicks messed up. Duh.

It was a good one. Mom and I saw Les Miz at the Riverside Center, and it was incredible. It's amazing what that little dinner theater can pull off!

Got some great presents. Clint and Tasha have a new companion- Merida! Clint thinks she looks familiar..."Tasha? Is there something you forgot to tell me?"
 photo merida_zpsfbdb8d80.jpg

Captain Kirk is not impressed with the inflatable Enterprise. "What is this, a starship for ANTS?"
 photo kirkandship_zps7c1be56d.jpg

And I have Emily, Molly's English friend, to add to my American Girls collection.

I still can't believe those to are being retired. :(

Tomorrow was also the second anniversary of Rory becoming my kitty! I can't believe it's been that long. My birthday kitten is all grown up...

Last post of the day, I promise. Two more ABSCAM shots of Christian Bale and Jeremy Renner on set:

Every set photo I see makes me even more excited about the movie. But I can't get over Jeremy's hair!

On the other side of the pond, a press release photo of Bryan Dick for Public Enemy:

The long hair is coming back, yay!

Just saw the musical at Riverside. Sally Struthers made another appearance at our local theater...and I just missed out on meeting her, which sucks. :( There was a nice reception with great food...which was a good thing, because the dinner actually sucked tonight. It's never been bad before. I mean, it's a dinner theater, not 4 star dining, but the food is usually good!

The show is so awesome! I laughed my ass off. Great music. It's very different from the movie, which was British- the setting is changed to Buffalo, NY, but the story is the same. Unemployed, not so hot guys decide to put on a stripping show to raise some cash. So much fun. And Sally clearly had a ball working with the boys.

I couldn't help but think...if the musical ever goes to the big screen, Jeremy Renner would be perfect for the lead. He has that working class everyman look to him, and a great sense of humor, too.

Mom and Dad know me so well...

 photo hellovalentine1_zps8b733731-1.jpg

And it came in a matching pink Hello Kitty tote...also stuffed with Godiva chocolates.

Hawkeye and Black Widow exchanged Valentines, too...

 photo clintashavday1_zps2b4a6fd1-1.jpg

And tried to steal my chocolate. Not. Cool.

 photo clintashavday2_zps51d60a8b-1.jpg

Oh, well, they can't eat much! :p

Mom and Dad took me to see Ain't Misbehavin' at the Riverside. It was awesome. I'm surprised at how much of Fats Waller's music I know- but then, Black and Blue is sort of a staple in high school and college jazz choirs. :p

I'm feeling so, so, so much better. Almost chipper. I had a good week. Not as much exercising done, but I'm still doing more than I had been!

Oh, wow. Les Miserables was AWESOME. I will be pissed if Anne Hathaway doesn't get an Oscar nomination. She tore my heart out as Fantine! I don't think there was a dry eye in the theater. It was a very good adaptation of the stage musical, though a couple of numbers were shortened. The cast was great- Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Javert, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen as the Thenardiers...the only weak link was Amanda Seyfried as Cosette. Her voice isn't strong or high enough for the role. I actually cringed during her high notes in "Heart Full of Love"! On the other hand, Eddie Redmayne as Marius and Samantha Barks as Eponine Were nearly perfect (she's played the role on stage).

Quite a few original West End and Broadway cast member popped up in small roles, too! The original Valjean, Colm Wilkinson, plays the bishop who shows Valjean kindness, and the original Eponine, Frances Ruffelle (who won a Tony for the role), plays a prostitute.

Anne Hathaway's mom played Fantine during a U.S. tour of the show! That was a neat bit of trivia.

I loved that the actors sang live while filming, as opposed to being pre-recorded.

I saw the show on Broadway in 1993- Fantine was played by Andrea McArdle, the original "Annie"!

Other movies- I saw The Hobbit last week. It was great, though it didn't grab me quite as much as The Lord of the Rings did. Martin Freeman was good as Bilbo Baggins, but Richard Armitage stole the film as Thorin Oakenshield. I love how all those tall actors were made into dwarfs! I just bought the soundtrack from itunes, because I had leftover money from a gift card I'd forgotten about! I wanted Les Mis, but it was a highlights only album. I'll wait for the full album to come out (supposedly there will be one). They left out a LOT of songs from the movie- including "A Little Fall of Rain", a stupid mistake!

Had a lot of fun. Dad and I took Mom to see Dreamgirls at the local dinner theater. It was awesome. One of their best productions!

My aunt Connie and her husband, Marv, visited this weekend. Luckily, no one got into any political fights. :p We had too much fun doing touristy stuff and eating to really talk about anything else.

We went to a wine tasting on Sunday. I've never done one before. I'm really not a big wine person, but some of the ones I tasted were pretty good.

Lots of photos of the winery and other stuff, and a couple of new Rory pics under the cut!

And I'm still not fully recovered from New Orleans! And neither is Dad's car. :( At least the new engine may be paid for as a good will gesture from the dealer that messed the car up in the first place. God, I hope so...

Last night, I got to see Sally Struthers in Hello, Dolly! at my local theater. Our group was supposed to meet her at a reception before, but she was too tired. I can see why, that show looks like it's hard on the performers! Anyway, it was a lovely production and Sally was wonderful. I was right in front, and could see a sparkle in her eye like she was REALLY enjoying her work. She handed out autographed cards during the show. So that's a nice addition to my scrapbook! I've never thought of her as a Broadway singer/actress, but that's what she's been doing since the end of All in the Family.

My aunt Pauletta is taking Mom on a cruise to the Bahamas for her birthday. Holy crap. I can't imagine Katie ever doing that for me! :p Meanwhile, my dad is headed to Michigan at the same time for a Michigan State Phi Mu Alpha reunion.

There's family camp in July in Kentucky. I haven't been to Louisville since my cousin's wedding three years ago! I've missed it. Unfortunately, I'll be away during Shore Leave in Maryland yet again. Another missed chance to meet ya,  [ profile] romulantbonz !

Sometime around my birthday (the big 4-0, which I am surprisingly not dreading), I'll be going to a Mets/Nats game at Nationals Park. The battle for last place in the NL East! :p

Just saw Hairspray at The Riverside Center, the local dinner theater. Yes, dinner theater. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! True, the "orchestra" was canned music, but the singing, dancing, and acting was first rate! Well done sets and costumes, too.  I think I can safely say that Hairspray is one of my all time favorite musicals. From the opening "Good Morning, Baltimore" to the end of "You Can't Stop the Beat", I had a blast. They won't be able to top this one. The next show is The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which should be fun.

Next year, they're doing Miss Saigon. No idea how they'll pull that one off. No room for the helicopter! :p Dreamgirls and Cabaret are also in the season. Looking good! I hope someday they repeat Cats, Evita, Big River, and Shenandoah, all of which I missed. :(

The theater company asks for suggestions for future shows- I submitted Company, Pippin, and The Producers.

My favorite Riverside shows before were 1776 (their very first production in '97), Damn Yankees, and last fall's Into the Woods.
mollybarton: (Default)
Hope all had a nice Valentine's Day. I got two boxes of chocolate. Yum. And does my sister know me or what- the box she gave me is a Happy Bunny design. :)

I'm saving the lid to put in my scrapbook.

Little Shop of Horrors was a lot of fun. I love that show! The local dinner theater is so good. The food was even good! Next season starts in May- they're doing Into the Woods (my favorite show after 1776), Chicago (third favorite), and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. They did Evita last fall. I can't believe I missed it. :(

Mom, Katie, and I (and possibly Sam) are defintely doing the AMC Oscar marathon- both days. I am so looking forward to it. Sam said Avatar sucked, but I'll judge for myself. We're going to see it in 3-D.

I made cookies for everyone- and I even found a recipe for sugar free linzer tortes for Dad.

And sugar or chocolate cookies for everyone else.

Finally, my little sweetheart, Eddie. He was so cute this afternoon. He tried to get into my chocolate. Bad Eddie!

I was finally able to get out today and do stuff! :) There's still a ton of snow everywhere, but it's finally starting to melt.

Tomorrow night I'm going to see Little Shop of Horrors at the local dinner theater (they're really good!). Hope there isn't a surprise snowstorm!
mollybarton: (flesh wound)
Spamalot was awesome. Mom and Dad and I got to D.C. a few hours early, so we had dinner at Au Bon Pain (we didn't want anything fancy). It was great! We spent an hour in Barnes & Noble and did some Christmas shopping. Finally, the theater doors opened! The National is a nice theater. I saw Chicago (with Deep Space Nine's Nana Visitor as Roxie Hart) there way back in 1999. We had orchestra seats! We were only about ten rows from the stage. The show is very silly. Most of the good gags from Holy Grail are there- the Rude Frenchmen ("Fetchez la vache! I fart in your general direction!"), the Knights who say "Ni!", the killer rabbit, the Black Knight, and Tim the Enchanter. I loved the music (I had "Bright Side of Life" in my head the rest of the night). I can't wait to get the CD! I love going to the theater. I don't get to do it enough.
